Great post - and it doesn't just stop at charities of course. David Pugh says the NLA "provides a useful revenue stream to British newspapers". Well I'm sure it does (!) but that doesn't mean it will always be there to do so.

As Clay Shirky describes - in terms of SOBA in the US - in his TED talk yesterday; all of these rules of engagement between the producers of media and us, its "consumers" (now also producers of course), were drawn up in the 20th Century. These old models don't like us sharing content - and desperately want to pull down the fortress walls in terms of their output / our consumption. If we're sharing content so liberally now, copyright is being breached beyond any bounds - all the time, everyday.

The NLA are lucky that at the moment they are still able to call-in these fees from companies and charities on their sharing and redistribution of news content. But - seriously - is this sustainable in terms of where we are now (think of Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, etc, and so on)?

Thanks so much for this blog, Carrie, and for your support of our campaign. The Guardian has now put up a poll asking if the media licensing fee is unfair on charities, so do vote 'yes' and show the sector's strength of feeling: http://www.guardian.co.uk/voluntary-sector-network/poll/2012/jan/18/media-licensing-fees-charities

hello, just saw your speech on the spending cuts and its effects on organisation, i think your speech is fantastic and i also stand for the same thing. I am presently doing my masters degree in refugee studies almost concluding to be percise. My thesis is on the same issue however, mine will be focused on the effect on education and legal aid. Just wandering whether you can please help with materials for my work to be done.

Thanks in appreciation.

Best regards

My regards to the NE....I used to be the Rural Dev't Programme Officer for N'land.

I'm certain you are right, Jane re "some of the smallest investments reaped the greatest rewards".....and as a related point too many people are fixed/fixated on ££ when 'help in kind' (e.g. free legal advice, at cost building work etc) can be as/more useful.

Well said Jo. As usual you articulate what the rest of us feel. Like you I can take an overview, and it's not very pretty at the moment. I think we'll start to see some major closures and cutbacks in the next 12-18 months. And for those of us suppoting the sector, the picture is no less bleak

However the way forward is to keep engaging, talking amd listening, look for partnership opportunities, don't turn inwards, and hold true to beliefs and values.

Although there are now over 30 million registered Facebook users in the UK its not time to ditch the traditional website. However it is (and I guess always has been) time for orgs to consider their web, Facebook (and Twitter, Google+, YouTube etc) presence as a part of a wider communication strategy.

I'd say, in addition to its website an organisation should have a Facebook page and put up sufficient information to help visitors to be signposted back to their main 'traditional' site. News and Status updates can be added to Facebook, or can be generated from content on Twitter. As websites enable much more flexibility of content and are more controllable by the organisation, services, resources and other information would remain there.

However it is important to have that place on Facebook and to engage with the people and organisations that are using the space. Hopefully people will see what is being posted, will 'Like' it and then follow on to find out more about your work through other channels.

I'm sure as social networks evolve (watch out for the Facebook Timeline feature!) the boundaries will blur, but as many places as possible should be maintained to attract that 'first contact' point into what our VCS orgs do.
